Dams are the life blood of farms and many rural and remote areas. When a
dam leaks, its a loss of a valuable and costly resource. Some dams can
be repaired with a dam sealers from a clay or polymer based material.
However where there exists poor soil conditions this is really at best
only a temporary solution. For true prevention of water loss a more
permanent solution is needed, such as a dam liner.
How to Seal a Dam
Dams will really only lose water through one of two mechanisms:
- Water evaporation
- Seepage and leaks into the ground
Why these occur though can be varied. Water loss through evaporation
is best mitigated at the design stage. Generally though, dams that are
well shaded and deeper evaporate less water.
